Setting up and using a Software Phone on a Laptop
If you work remotely and need access to your desk phone from your office, a software instance of your phone can be setup to work through your laptop. The software phone must be setup by IT before taking the laptop off-campus. This article assumes that a software phone has been setup on your laptop by IT. However if you would like to request access, click here.
1. The laptop will need connected to VPN before launching the software phone.
2. Plug in your USB Headset BEFORE you launch the software phone. The software phone is listed on your computer as “Cisco IP Communicator”.
3. Once the software has loaded check the audio settings through the options panel. Click the menu button on your soft phone.
4. Click Preferences.
5. Click the Audio Tab and change the settings to your preference. Please change the settings to run the call through your headset.
Change “Headset” and “Speakerphone” to your headset that is plugged into the laptop. For many users, the listed name is Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000. Change Handset to “Conexant…”
6. Click OK. You may now be prompted to run through the audio setup wizard. If you have chosen to use the headset, now is a good time to make sure the ringer works properly. Click the Volume UP/DOWN button on the software and listen for a ringer.
7. If you cannot hear the ringer, open your Volume Mixer from the task tray by right clicking the Speaker icon, then clicking “Volume Mixer”.
8. Make sure that Conexant or Speakers are selected in the pictured drop down. Then select your desired volume.
With this setting adjusted, click the Volume UP/DOWN button on your IP Communicator phone and adjust accordingly.
